about

‘Power Reflection’ is the debut album from Bristol based Heavy Feelings, a musical collaboration centred around guitarist Ben Shillabeer. Active in the fringes of the city’s scene for 20 years, he has enjoyed tenures in Soeza, The John Parish Band and Empty Pools to name a few. However the project’s genesis was originally a solo endeavour, and Ben attempted to record a Heavy Feelings album in pandemic stricken 2020. Working in isolation during the first lockdown, he was dissatisfied with the results and shelved the takes. Instead of re-recording the songs, Ben, inspired by the approach adopted by Bill Orcutt on 2021’s ‘Made Out Of Sound’ decided instead to compose a fresh batch of material, this time jamming to pre-written drum tracks and loops provided by former mentor Parish, studio partner Ben Turner and Bristol mainstay Andy Sutor. As the material took shape the net was cast wider still, dictating an ensemble dynamic to both individual songs and the album as a whole, with contributions from Emily Cross (Loma, Cross Record), Sophia Barnes (of Bristol’s Indigos) and three songs co-written with Nadia Garofalo of acclaimed Chicago post-punks Ganser. Familiar Bristol faces such as Drew Morgan, Tina Hitchens and Aaron Dewey (also of Soeza, John Parish, Empty Pools) make appearances too, shifting the course away from a purely guitar orientated indie-rock album to something more spontaneous and improvised, without fixed boundaries. The sonic tapestry is completed with the unifying thread of Lucy Underhill’s saxophone (of Dorset’s Gris De Lin). The result is a collection of songs lyrical and instrumental that are both timely and relevant but also act as rearview mirror glance back at 20 years of bands, projects and friendships formed in the sidelines inhabited as a part-time, DIY musician. ‘Power Reflection’ is both a personal love letter to a home city and a testament to the value of continued creativity in everyday life, especially during the most unsettling of times.
